How to Ski With Your Whole Family

Ski with the whole family.

Ski with the whole family.

Between the ski boots, renting skis, assembling your layers of insulation from the cold, and making sure that you remain safe, skiing can sometimes feel like quite the involved hobby. So it’s understandable if some parents don’t even want to take their kids skiing very often – after all, if it’s that much trouble for one person, what happens when you add a couple of children to the mix? But things don’t have to be so hard. Here are some great tips for skiing with your entire family…without the headaches.

Safety first. Helmets for everyone! Safety comes first, so don’t skip out on this detail even if you have more people along on the ride. Kids don’t always like putting on helmets, so try to get it over with as soon as possible so you can all get on enjoying your day.

Make a day of it. If you’re planning a ski trip, this will come easy, but even if you’re not going on a ski trip, a jaunt onto the slopes should require that you make a day out of it. For example, you will want to prepare everyone’s winter clothes the night before you go skiing so don’t have to cut into your skiing time when you’re ready to go. If you’re staying in a ski lodge, makes sure you rent your equipment the night before, as well, so that you don’t have to do any fitting the next morning. This will allow you to snap out of bed and get to work. Preparation, preparation, preparation.

Don’t stretch your limits. Skiing is an adventurous sport that pushes many people to their limits, but if you’re skiing with your family, there’s no reason to push yourself to the limit right away. Instead, go on the easier hills first, especially if your children need time to get acclimated or shake of the rust. If you’ve never been skiing before, take some ski lessons this winter with a qualified instructor. See if you can get family discounts if you all take your lessons at once.

Utilize lifts properly. Ski lifts are a great invention, but they can be intimidating for kids. Ask the staff if there are any ways to help your children onto the lifts. You might find signs that show you where the children should sit on the lift.
