How to Get Ready for the Skiing Season

Getting Ready for Ski Season

With the winter months rolling around and the northern hemisphere once again retreating away from the sun, skiing and snowboarding fanatics are getting excited: ski season is ready to begin again. For the avid skiing junkie, the skiing season is year-round as they chase the best places on Earth, but for the local ski hobbyists, the cold weather couldn’t come back soon enough.

But what about people who are only interested in skiing? Is now the time to get ready for the season? You bet. Here’s how to get started today.

Don’t buy all of your equipment; instead, do scouting. If you’re not a full-time skier, there’s not a great reason to buy a lot of expensive skiing equipment. Instead, you’ll want to actually scout around so that you can prepare for the monetary investment involved with skiing. Which ski hills are advertising the lowest prices? What kind of rental equipment can you find that won’t break your bank account?

Write down a list of all of the things you need to do before you start skiing this season. Do you need some lessons? Will you need a place to rent skis? Will you actually have to find a ski hill nearby? These are some high priorities, so be sure that you’ve actually got a game plan you can follow this winter.

Shape up! Skiing is fun, but it can also be a bit of a demanding sport precisely because you’ll want to be skiing all day. If you want to have the right kind of endurance, agility, and strength you’ll need for a great day of skiing, you’ll have to shape up.

It’s best to stay in good shape year-round, but if you need to tone up a little bit before skiing, you can start by working on your legs. Go walking or jogging, or simply ride your bike before it gets too cold and treacherous outside. If necessary, join a gym for a month or two – some don’t cost too much and you can use their exercise equipment 24 hours a day!

Build up some basic fitness by tackling challenging but not exhausting workouts like running, biking, or even swimming. Don’t push yourself too hard, but don’t go totally easy on yourself either. With enough work you’ll have a better base for skiing and won’t be huffing and puffing quite as much on the hill!
