Snowboarding is actually a little bit slower and may be a little bit easier to learn as a novice. The technical difference between downhill skiing and snowboarding is fairly obvious. Skiers have poles to help them turn and keep them where snowboarders do not. Getting up after a fall can be a bit of a challenge on a snowboard since there are no poles to lean on. The type of snow that is best for snowboarding is a loose powdery snow while packed wet snow is best for skiing. Going down the mountain is also difficult at first because you are not able to distribute your weight as evenly on a snowboard.
