Downhill Skiing

Downhill skiing is the most invigorating sport there is, but if you are not outfitted the right way invigorating can go to freezing in a second. If you are new to downhill skiing or a cross country convert then there are a few things you need to know before outfitting yourself. Downhill skiing is colder than cross country skiing. You are not moving as much and the wind chill is much higher. When outfitting yourself for downhill skiing make sure you have the appropriate cold weather gear.

The next thing you will notice is that there is a huge difference in the skis themselves. Downhill skis are wider than cross country skis. this provides the degree of control you will need when reaching high speeds down the slope. Also downhill ski boots are attached to the ski by bindings at the ball of the foot and the heel. If you are only used to cross country skis that are attached at the toe then this will take some getting used to. Also downhill ski boots are typically less comfortable than cross country skis. A good ski sock like the kind we usually have on sale in the clearance section can make the boot more comfortable.

As you begin to get more and more used to downhill skiing you will want better and better gear. Make sure you take a few lessons if you are transitioning from cross country to downhill skiing as you want to make sure you are safe above all else.
